Statistics

1/26/2006 preliminary survey results of Foster Care Youth in Wayne County showed…

·        47% experienced homelessness
·        Only 36% graduated from high school
·        Average monthly earnings, when employed, are $452
·        54% received public assistance

National statistics (from the above survey) show a disturbing picture…

·        Less than 50% of youths graduated from high school (vs. 85% for all 18-24 year olds)
·        Less than 13% graduated from a four-year college
·        25% endured a period of homelessness
·        Almost 65% did not maintain employment for a year
·        Over 25% of young men spent time in jail
·        40% became parents

Furthermore, young adults out of foster care are 51% more likely to be unemployed, 27% more likely to be incarcerated, 42% more likely to become teen parents and 25% more likely to become homeless.  60% will have a child within 4 years and over half will be back in the legal system within 2 years of “aging out”.
