National statistics (from the above survey) show a disturbing picture… · Less than 50% of youths graduated from high school (vs. 85% for all 18-24 year olds) · Less than 13% graduated from a four-year college · 25% endured a period of homelessness · Almost 65% did not maintain employment for a year · Over 25% of young men spent time in jail · 40% became parents
Furthermore, young adults out of foster care are 51% more likely to be unemployed, 27% more likely to be incarcerated, 42% more likely to become teen parents and 25% more likely to become homeless. 60% will have a child within 4 years and over half will be back in the legal system within 2 years of “aging out”.
